Program Description
Sekolah Seni Tubaba (Tubaba Art School) offers an open call for five artists from around the world (non-Indonesian artist), consisting of two dancers, and one each for a musician, children's theater artistic director, and visual artist. The residency will take place from July 1st to August 5th, 2024 (35 days) in Tulang Bawang Barat, Lampung province, Indonesia.
Resident artists are expected to exchange knowledge and collaborate in the incubation process at Sekolah Seni Tubaba with students and local residents to broaden the community's understanding of art. The residency process may present its final results and become part of Tubaba Art Festival #8: "Self and Space: Festivity From The Kitchen."
As the final edition of the thematic triplet "Self and Space," Tubaba Art Festival (TAF) #8 (2024) continues its curatorial consistency based on the concept of traditional Lampung houses. Previously situated on the veranda (“Terrace of Awareness,” 2022) as an exposition, then entering the middle space for deeper conversations (“Interface Living Room,” 2023). Now, it enters the most domestic space, the space for the beginning of concocting and cooking: the Kitchen.
The Kitchen is not just a spatial area isolated from guests, but rather an open space for anyone to engage in concocting and cooking each piece of art before it is presented to the public. "Festivity from The Kitchen" is chosen as this year's theme to showcase an inclusive festival. In this kitchen, anyone can participate, share, and process knowledge together, ultimately culminating in a collective celebration.
about Sekolah Seni Tubaba
Sekolah Seni Tubaba is an arts training program designed as a method for human resource development (HRD). The artistic training provided includes dance, theater, literature, music, visual arts, and film. Its orientation is not solely to groom students or participants to become artists, but to invite everyone to engage in the artistic process and experience art, thereby enhancing the quality of humanity.
Adhering to the Tubaba philosophy of Nemen (hard work), Nedes (consistency), and Nerimo (sincerity) or abbreviated as "Nenemo," the curriculum or artistic process carried out by Tubaba Art School is educational, distributive, flexible, and engaging. Within it, empowerment education takes place, self-awareness is fostered, motivation is instilled, space is provided for various forms of interaction, rationality grows, empathy is cultivated, and positive behaviors are encouraged.
Incubation Process designed at Sekolah Seni Tubaba for TAF #8 (2024):
1. Collaborative Dance Performance with Hybrid Music themed "Krakatau: Beyond the Place"
"Krakatau: Beyond the Place" is the theme offered to selected resident artists to collaborate with Tubaba Art School in presenting imaginative ideas about the future dialogued with Mount Krakatau. Krakatau is not merely considered a geographical location or physical place, but also a source of inspiration, imagination, and contemplation that transcends its physical boundaries. The term "beyond the place" indicates the concept that Krakatau holds a broader meaning than just a geographical location and can serve as a metaphor for exploring conceptual, emotional, and philosophical boundaries beyond physical measures. This theme is expected to stimulate conversations and reflections on the relationship between humans, nature, and the future of this planet through the medium of dance and hybrid music, while also fostering collaboration between artists and local communities to create new movements about the yet unrealized future. Krakatau is not only seen as a historical natural phenomenon but also as a catalyst for constructing narratives and speculative actions about the future of humanity and the planet.
2. Visual Arts Exhibition
The visual art exhibition is designed as a space to showcase new artworks from resident program artists collaborating with children and adolescent art groups from Sekolah Seni Tubaba as well as local communities such as the women's group of tikew weavers (traditional Lampung woven mats) and tapis makers (traditional Lampung textiles). At Sekolah Seni Tubaba, children are introduced to basic principles of visual arts during each session, while middle-tier groups begin working on their painting projects on medium-sized canvases. Advanced groups, usually with over five years of experience, are preparing exhibition projects featuring various artworks, ranging from sketches to paintings of varying sizes. These creations reflect the students' personal ideas, promising a diverse exhibition of works in terms of both technique and themes.
3. Children's Theater Performance
The children's theater performance aims to broaden the accessibility of performing arts for children from various social and economic backgrounds. By providing affordable or even free theater performances, the festival is committed to ensuring that all children have the opportunity to enjoy and experience the wonders of performing arts. Through this sub-platform, the festival not only provides entertainment for children but also serves as a platform for educating, inspiring, and developing the creative potential of future generations.

Who Can Apply
Non-Indonesian artists at mid-career level: two dancers, and one each from hybrid music, visual arts, and children's theater. Proficiency in English is required. Community engagement will be managed by a curator/dramaturg and program managers who will also handle translations if needed.
What We Offer
Tulang Bawang Barat (Tubaba) is a regency located in the northern part of Lampung Province. Established as a city in 2008, it covers an area of 1,201.00 square kilometers, with a population of approximately 300,000 people. It is a low-lying area with an average elevation of 39 meters above sea level. The average temperature ranges from 30-34°C, with annual rainfall between 57-299 mm/year and an average humidity of 85.2%.
Tubaba is not just devoid of mountains and seas, two important geographical elements for nature-based tourism; initially, it did not have direct access to the Trans-Sumatran highway, as the city was secluded in the interior of the third largest island in Indonesia. However, with the inauguration of the Trans-Sumatran toll road in 2021, Tubaba now has direct access to the Raden Inten II International Airport in South Lampung.
Awareness of the limited natural potential of Tubaba has sparked a "Cultural Revolution." Infrastructure and superstructure development are progressing simultaneously. Each year, Tubaba creates new high-quality public spaces, including the Islamic Center-Sessat Agung Tubaba, Las Sengok, and Ulluan Nughik. These public spaces are utilized for various purposes, including religious activities, cultural education, environmental education, and architectural tourism.
Artistic education, culminating in the annual Tubaba Art Festival, is a method for shaping the character of Tubaba's residents. To date, thousands of Tubaba residents have learned theater, music, dance, literature, visual arts, ceramics, and film. The consistency of cultural programs has transformed the city from being a "city in the middle of nowhere: neither a transit nor a destination" into a city visited by approximately 2,000,000 tourists/audiences annually.
Below are the guaranteed provisions for each production:
Production budget (max): Collaborative Dance Performance with Hybrid Music: 50.000.000 IDR; Childern's Theater Performance: 30.000.000 IDR; Visual Arts Exhibition: 10.000.000 IDR.
Per diem: 320,000 IDR/day.
Accommodation: Traditional Lampung house with shared bedrooms and kitchen.
Transportation: Round-trip local flight tickets and a car for local mobility (we do not provide flight tickets to/from the artist's home country; however, we can provide an official invitation letter if needed to assist in securing travel grants in their home country).
